Washing and caring for silk: How to keep the material beautiful for longer

Silk is a particularly fine and delicate natural fiber that requires gentle care to maintain its beauty over time. Often, it is enough to air out silk garments thoroughly after wearing them rather than washing them right away. Perfume and deodorant should be allowed to dry completely before getting dressed, as residue can leave stains or cause discoloration. When storing silk, keep it clean, dry, and protected from light, for example in a breathable fabric bag, to help preserve its sheen and color.

Whether hand washing or machine washing is suitable depends first and foremost on the care label. If washing is permitted, wash silk by hand or on a silk or delicate cycle at a maximum temperature of 30°C (86°F), using a special silk or delicate detergent without bleach or enzymes. Avoid soaking the garment for too long or wringing it out. Gently press out excess water, roll the garment in a towel, and carefully reshape it. Then allow it to air dry away from direct sunlight and heat sources such as radiators. If the care label permits ironing, use a low-temperature setting and iron the garment inside out.
