4 Grip –The Winner Sock
The FALKE brand is synonymous with quality and reliability. The production standards and the continuous advancement of its products require technical expertise and innovativeness. The FALKE Ergonomic Sport System, designed especially to meet the needs of athletes, is a perfect example. Andreas Falke, who is responsible for the company’s internal communications and sponsoring, and Innovation Manager Michael Klein, bring in professional athletes and experts to help conceive and develop new products.
The innovative sport sock 4 Grip was born through this method. “We asked ourselves how we could help athletes ergonomically by using our expertise,” explains Andreas Falke.
After talking to professional footballers, it quickly became clear what the athletes’ biggest concern was: that their feet shouldn’t slip in their socks and that their socks shouldn’t slip in their shoes, even in a sudden change of direction. That is what inspired FALKE to develop the perfect sport sock.
“It sounds so easy – we’re going to make a sock that doesn’t slip. But there is a lot of know-how that went into the production.” stresses Michael Klein.
Michael Klein: Product development of the 4 grip
It was a long process from the idea to a marketable product.
“The 4 Grip’s product development took two years. It was paramount to us to create a product that is both aesthetically and technically unique, something that athletes would wear because they trust us. Only then do we consider a product good.”
The manufacturing process for a single pair of socks is complex. The design is translated stitch by stitch into a digital pattern and is then coded into the knitting machine with all technical parameters. Several hundred metres of yarn are made into the perfectly formed right and left sock – a FALKE trademark.
The Winner Sock
During the European Cup, the Icelandic goal-keeper Hannes Thór Halldórsson wore the 4 Grip during every game, and gave himself and the sock a place of honour in the books. Michael Klein and Andreas Falke can be proud: “The 4 Grip is a winner sock!”
